Norval Gallery in Derby
If you ever find yourself in Derby in the Kimberley region of WA, it’s surely only a matter of time before you discover the Norval Gallery.
It is crammed full of artist Mark Norval’s work, past and present, along with artwork by other local artists and it’s a feast for the eyes. It’s also the only gallery I’ve ever visited that has a large sign outside the door announcing that dogs are most welcome to come in too.
While Mark and his wife Mary are inside the gallery, chatting to visitors and answering questions, at any given time there’s a number of local artists working on art pieces at the long tables outside.
Even allowing plenty of time, chances are you’ll need to go back for a second visit to take it all in.
Another must-see in Derby is Mark’s six metre high sculpture on the marsh behind the caravan park which is best viewed at sunset.
