Portraits of an artist {a collaboration}

After mentioning a collaboration a few times over the last year or so, artist Kate Gillett and I finally got to hang out together recently, In the end it was all very last minute when Kate called to say she was here in Denmark (WA) visiting family. All we knew was that we wanted to take photographs both in the studio, and later on, in the beautiful late afternoon light, at the beach on the amazing south coast. Through her art and accompanying words on her Instagram feed, I knew that Kate has the admirable ability to be as comfortable in her vulnerability as she is in her strength. Happily, I think we captured that, although I suspect it was less by my design and more because Kate is so very good at being Kate.

After seeing the images, Kate messaged me with the best feedback a portrait photographer could wish for:

“There is something so deeply affirming and validating to have these parts of me captured in your photographs. I can see myself more clearly. I have tangible reminders of who I am. Thank you Nic, for your skill in capturing my essence and for the safe space you created for me to express it.”
