Road Trip to SA {show n tell}
I'd never crossed the Nullarbor by road before so I wasn't sure what lay ahead on our little adventure east in April. We were heading over for the surf; to the Desert Camp. It has another name but it is one of the Australian surfing community's best-kept secrets and I'm not going to be the one to spill the beans.
Here's some of my scribbled notes from along the way to accompany the photos here...So many unexpected variations in the landscape across and the always changing big, big skies. South Australia is a different colour to WA - the reds more muted and earthy. The white dusty sand that coats your skin. The landscape and lifestyle at the camp is harsh at best. It's been described by author Christo Reid as "the essence of hardcore surf adventure...Remote, desolate and dangerous. Out there - is a good description. Primitive - a generous compliment...a week is as arduous as a year". There is also a veil of sadness with reminders of shark attacks and lives lost (including the shark net at the jetty which was a response to a young guy being attacked while swimming just metres from the beach). The surf dogs - they come in all shapes and sizes, each patiently waiting and watching as their people surf. Our beautiful friend Barbary who travelled a 1000km in the other direction to meet up with us there. And all the characters we met along the way with special mentions - Billy February, Sunny, Ron and Moose...thanks for making us welcome and sharing stories and histories. And a big thank you to Rick for showing me round the funkiest caravan in SA, fish dinners and chats around the campfire.
And finally a note about the Nullabor Links 18 hole par 72 golf course spanning 1365km making it the longest in the world. It spans from Kalgoorlie in Western Australia to Ceduna in South Australia with one hole in each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway :-)
